28th June A.K.A My first Week

Frontier Staff Cabin... All Internationals...

Dance Party Glow Sticks
So the first on camp i spent in Sherando and it was Pretty cold. But the next morning me and Bear had  look around and found the showers bumping into various staff and then headed to our first morning meeting. I was in Girl Power with Mac, Pickles, Zazu, Pinky and Luna and they were all great, and explained everything to me which was also great. I was on the green so i kept the girls entertained while the rest were arriving which was also cool. We were to live in frontier, which is a platform tent living unit, and out tent was completely international. So we all hung our respective flags to show the girls where were were and for decorative purposes.

Mac had a bright idea!

During the week the girls had a dance party in which Mac got glow sticks and made 'girl power' out of it which was a nice touch and we had a disco ball that didn't work so she put glow sticks inside. It worked to an extent!  We then danced around, played games and sang songs together including a song about a decomposing moose... i was kinda shocked when i first heard it but it was all the same fun anyway. The girls had me doing hair wraps for them too before it was bed time.
One of the feel good things of Camp!

Mail came in everyday after lunch during F.O.B (feet on bed) which was an hour of rest for the girls where they could write home, read, and draw, talk and in my case do hair wraps for them and the Art Gallery Girls, who also lived in Frontier. We got letters from the girls as we'd written woodland fairy mail for those who hadn't got mail and they wrote back. We also got a staff card thanking us which was sweet.

River Crossing
Eagle Rock Staff Pose...
Today we went to Eagle Rock which was pretty epic. The 30 minute walk (or so) along the river and the trees was really nice, reminded me of my DofE days. The view was amazing to say the least, nothing but Forrest and valleys and hills for miles and miles; as far as the eye could see. We took a group photo and ate our trail mix. Our melted trail mix which was now a pool of chocolate, marshmallow, raisins (not bad) and salty crisps. An interesting taste to say the least. We took pictures and after a little while we made our way back down, looking at the 'elbow' tree and the girls worked on their campfire skit. At campfire i got a shout out wand which was pretty cool, just that reassurance that i was doing my job properly and the girls sang the song they'd made. The kids go home tomorrow. I can't believe this first week is over already, but i cant wait for next week already. More campers, more tales to tell.

Luna's Handy Work!
Dirt that tastes quite nice...
So I'm sat writing this out on the picnic tables as im staying up for bed checks when Luna comes back with a wreck that shes taken from the kitchen. Now it was unwanted and from monday night. It's got crushed oreo, gummy worms, pudding and chocloate chips in and it tastes sooo good! She then changed the wreck order and messed around with it. It was fun. That was essentially my first staff bonding.

Smile!

23 June 2012

So packed and ready. In the car by 6:30 I got the airport at about 8:30 (Heathrow), checked in only to find out the flight was delayed. So the 11:15 is now leaving at 15:30. Oh Dear. So i sit with Dad, Meg and Gran in Costa and we have Coffee, ring Camp Leaders to let them know my flights delayed and have a little walk around.

At about 10ish its time to say goodbye and we all cry, even Dad. With a quick hug and a prep talk on being safe and careful i'm waving to 3 generations of my family as i pass through to security checks. I set the alarm off. I still had my hat on which i'd put a pin in. Looked pretty stupid cause i completely forgot i had it on. Go through the full body scan, have a pat down search and im through the the departure lounge.

After walking around for a while i go in a little 'London' shop and buy a little bear which i aptly named Greg as as i walked out of the shop I meet Greg Proops. At first i saw him walk by and i did the whole. He looked like Greg Proops thing, then i though, well sod it if its not him its not him. So i turn back and see that he's stood looking at a turnstile thing at padlocks etc. So i say, "Hi, really sorry, but are you Greg Proops?" to which he replied "Yeah! Hi!" so i was shaking like a leaf and said "i watch you on Whose Line, UK and US" "Yeah, not anymore" "No its Trust Us With Your Life Now isnt it?" "Yeah July" he smiled. "Could i be really cheeky and ask for a picture with you?" "Sure thats fine". So shakily i tuned my iphone around and tool a picture (hence the blur). "Is that ok for you chick?" "Thats great. Thank You so Much" to which we both mutually smiled a goodbye and walked off in separate directions and i rang mum and needed to sit down because i'd just met one of my comic idols. It was Crazy. Thank God for that Delayed plane. I assumed he was catching the San Francisco plane home as it was the next plane.

So the board said my gate opens at 14:15 so at 14:15 i stand by the board waiting to see, i stand for about 10 mins and nothing changes and start to have a walk around, charged my phone on the power towers and then walked around a bit longer and at about 14:45 I walk near where the gates are and a real hobbit walks by. Elijah Wood walks by with a host of bouncers and airline staff. Frodo Baggins himself. Then literally minutes later my gate is announced like i was meant to see him. So i ring and text final goodbyes and say goodbye to home soil and walk down to my gate. Gate 21 to boarding and see my plane.

So at 15:30 im sat in plane, in the middle seats and can think of nothing but cabin pressure, expecting Arthur Shappy to appear. Soon after its seat belts on and we're taxiing down the runway. Then we're off. The engines kick in and the power is amazing. The feeling as you're pushed back into your seat and the excitement that brews as the wheels leave the ground is incredible. I look out the window of the plane as it tilts, turning, still climbing. The green fields of England below. Bye Bye England. See you Soon. So there was good food and good in-flight entertainment on the way there. I watched Sherlock. Yes i know. Woman in Black, The Big Bang Theory and a host of other things. I felt so ill on the descent however. Broke out in a cold sweat and could feel my stomach turning right up until those wheels hit the tarmac. It was horrid, but then i was excited to get off the plane. Customs moved reasonably quick, as did baggage claim and i was through. There standing in matching t-shirts are Splash and Red, the CD and CAD smiling, they both give me a hug and we all leave to go for Dinner. Me, Bear, (Sophie), Dee (Hannah), Sirena (Yody) and Chuckles. We go to a place called Red Robins and i have one of the best burgers I've ever eaten and we all chat. Splash jokes about how the acceptance on the Camp Leaders forms are literally a click of a button and how it would be awkward if she sneezed and accidentally accepted someone. About 10pm we leave to head back to camp, it takes about 2 hours and we all fall asleep. We're Welcomed by the staff and are briefed a bit on where were are, where the Biffys are and what Biffys actually are then we are shown to our Cabin. Sherando, our first home on camp. Splash laughs about how trusting we are that some stranger has got us on a plane and left us in the middle of the woods to sleep, but we're all exhausted and as soon as everyone's gone and we're ready for bed, we're asleep.

I WENT TO CAMP

I realise i never actually posted that i got placed, went to camp, and had the time of my life. I think some blogging is in order. It will come. I'll type up my journal.

TOUCH WOOD. I'm on review.

So i'm on review for the 7th (6th if you ignore the fact the last 2 times its been the same camp.)

Over the weekend my application went back to placeable, but about an hour ago, i went back on review with the same camp.

A few possibilities are running through my head:
  1. The application timed out
  2. They didn't mean to take me off review
  3. They decided they may want me and want to look into my application more
Please Please Please.

Getting anxious now...

So although there is still 2 months left in the placement season, I'm getting incredibly fidgety about being placed.

Also a camp may want me from next Saturday, so it doesn't help and the fact my exam is Thursday is also making me nervous.

Still. Onward and Upwards! Watching Sherlock now. Naturally.

So, It's a waiting Game...

Been on Review 4 times now after the last fell through as all spots were filled. Considering We are already in May I'm hoping that this will all get rolling soon. Everything is complete.

Well apart from Insurance and Flights because I don't know where I'm going... Yet...

London Called...

Right.
Visa was sorted yesterday, after getting lost several times... but thanks to Grandads good sense of direction rubbing off on me and DofE i found my way back on track pretty quickly. Without any assistance from modern technology too!

The embassy is huge. Armed police and cameras everywhere. I had a good day in London Town on my own, sightseeing, being geeky and smiling to myself as I walked through Belgravia thinking about Scandalous things... See what i did there?

Anyway...went on to Speedys Cafe which has the most amazing food for such a great price, it really does, again smiling stupidly at the on set pictures they had of Sherlock as i drank my Tea.

I did various other related activities as a 'Tourist for the Day'. I went to Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace as well as a tour bus. Oh oh! I went to The Sherlock Holmes...Naturally. Next time I think a venture inside is in order to have some food.
But anyway everything is in order for my profile, all documents are submitted, been on review 3 times...now to wait for an amazing summer!

Getting There!

So now i can get going with the final parts of my profile! I can get an embassy interview, get my police check, still need a third reference and concentrate on my revision and notes for the exams! although i may wait till next week to do that after the lecture on our exams, catch up on notes and do part B for Experimental. Things are getting rolling and will hopefully soon enough be over, ready for summer.

Excited...

Next weekend will be my training/preparation day for camp.

Naturally I'm excited for that and after Thursday i'll have a complete week off from doing any work!

Friday, 9 March 2012

Pardon?

I should have found this out Before I'd sent it off for my new one, i knew i should have asked before. Oh well, whats done is done.

The doctors have lost my medical form

20:04
THEY FOUND MY MEDICAL FORM...
PASSPORT IS BEING CHECKED

Need to get a third reference now!....

Thursday, 8 March 2012

I knew that was going to happen...

So after getting my 'You're on Review' email i go back to placeable...disappointing i guess.

Still, Onward and Upwards.

SOOO plan of action...

  • get medical form back!
  • Passport stuff
  • ACRO stuff
  • VISA
  • GET PLACED!
Right...back to watching Toby!

Got an email saying I was 'On Review' today...

Despite being on Review since Monday (5/3), i got an email telling me i was on review today, which is always good news.

Haven't heard back from camp since i emailed them Tuesday so i'm guessing they're debating over whether they want me. Some people are on review for a matter of days and some are on review for weeks.

Seeing as its taking a while to upload documents, etc i'm wondering if ill actually get placed with them, but time will tell, maybe they'll like me enough to place be before hand?

And So It begins...

Its 1.30. Poppy's asleep, resting against my leg and I'm completing my first post on what's going to be my blog for the summer, granted i get placed at a camp in the USA.

So I'm on review! For the first time! So the camp is called Camp Tecumseh and  is a faith camp  who have contacted me to work in the equestrian side of camp. Its in Brookston, Indiana, about 13 hours by car from New York, which is mind boggling, considering how small the UK is.

Looking forward to working in the states!
